Radio drama production

Production journey

We will be talking about the process we went through in order to complete out radio drama and what had to be carried out step by step.

When it came to the production processes, we had to think about what operating equipment we will need and how it was be used in the production. The types of equipment we came across were the audio equipment and how to set it up. As well as this it gave us an insight of the overall effect of the audio and how it effected our radio drama. When recording the sound onto Garage band, we had to listen to every recording individually and adjust the audio levels if a certain sound was too quiet or too loud. We did this to make our sounds seem more realistic and go with the other action that are in the background of the radio drama. When in the production we used digital audio software to record all our audio to get the best possible outcome and make it sound to a high standard. We used this software as it would be more accurate and would suit the production of our radio drama. When in the production of our radio drama, we had management of personnel such as crew, stuff and audience. We had these personnel as we needed to keep everyone in order as well as making sure everyone knows what they are doing or what needs to be done.

When it came to the recorded studio programme we mainly focused this in our post-production process. We had to log our recordings based on the quality of the sound, the usability and the overall duration of the clip recorded. We logged all this on a rushes log to help us keep on track as well as knowing what needs to be used in the final piece. We also thought about the used of digital audio editing software when it came to the final step of our radio drama. During this process we had to adjust levels of our audio to make everything sound the same. As well as this we added associated sound effects in the background to create more of an atmosphere and make it sound realistic in the location it's supposed to be. When it came to the file formats, we decided that it would be suitable to export our radio drama as a AIFF as it would then be easy to import that off onto YouTube.

When it came to recording and editing the sound elements, we thought about the equipment and all the pre-production materials that will be used in order for us to finish with the best possible outcome in the end. We used a microphone to record all our sounds to a high quality, and for that we used materials to create the sound effects. We done this to get a realistic enough sound so it can be added to the story. The pre-production materials we used were the script to help us with what all the characters will say and the order they came in. This was used as a navigation for the characters. We used our risk assessment and health and safety guidelines to guide us in what we were allowed to do and what potential hazards that could occur in the recording process. Each time we recorded a sound we would check it then adjust the sound levels if it needed to make a clip sound better or enhance a certain action within the story. We took a log of everything as well as the edits that will need to be made if the original radio drama wasn't made to point.

Analysis of feedback

In order for our radio drama to receive feedback we decided to give people a questionnaire after they have watched our radio drama. This gave us a chance to ask questions about the radio drama and see how people responded to it. After reviewing the questionnaire we can see that there is things we have done well and there is things we can improve on. One of the strengths that they said is that the realistic sound effects were good. However they said that the sound effect was too long. Another strength that they said our radio drama had is the main character. They all label that the main character (Samantha) was good but because we did a questionnaire we were not able to ask further question such as why did they like the main character which would helped us understand better.

Another strength they stated is that the overall story was good which again, we needed to ask further questions to understand why they liked the story. In the questionnaire we asked for them to state any weaknesses our radio drama had. One of the weaknesses they all said is that is the sound effects were repetitive which made some parts of the radio drama feel slow and like it dragged. Another weaknesses that they said that the radio drama had is that they needed more conversations within the radio drama but because we did a questionnaire we were not able to ask why they felt like that.

Another weaknesses they stated was that the sound effects were too long. After receiving the feedback we would make improvements in our radio drama such as looking at different voice actors in order to add more entertainment. We would also need to review the sound effects because all of the feedback that we received said that the sound effects were too long so we should look at creating new sound effects and not making them to long. Another improvement that we should make is looking at the script because one of the people did not understand the message of the radio drama which could be down to the story telling of the radio drama, so by reviewing the radio drama we can develop the story and make it more understandable for the audience. Overall we created a good radio drama however we need to add some improvements in order to create a better radio drama.
