Techniques and processes used to create sound elements

For this task I was told to create various sounds through foley and wild track, I also had to use different types of microphones such as Rode Mic, USB condenser and a voice recorder.

In the video the first type of recording device that I use was the a Rode mic. This recording device was unclear and hard to use. You had to hold the microphone that was attached to the camera still and make sure that I did not move. There was quite a bit of static sounds in the audio recording which over powered the audio and I was not able to hear the actual recording.










The next recording that I did was the school corridor and I used the voice recorder to do this. I had an actual school so I was able to stand in the corridor of the school and wait for the bell to go and for the studies to come out. The recording quality of the voice recorder was clear and picked up everything and when it came to put the audio on finale cut, it came out clear and crisp.

The rest of the recording that I did was with the USB condenser. For the raindrop I used the sugar crystals and dropped into in the a hollow bottle and put the mic close to the bottle. I picked up the sugar crystal and sprinkled it to the bottle.
I also used the USB mic to create the fire place. My partner used her voice to create the sound of fire place fume. I used a bottle and my partner ripped paper to create the effect of a fire place. The last recording that I did was for the restaurant. I did when I recorded the voice, me and my partner did the back ground voices we staged conversations and did layers of conversations. I also got plates played around with them. The USB condenser was clear and easy to use and it picks up all of the sound that you make.

Foley effects

Foley sound effects are created to increase the realism of different specific soundtracks. When foleying it requires people who are able to think outside the box and to have a creative and skillful way of creating sounds using the subtle sounds that boom microphones and other on-set recording devices can pick up.  The pace and timing of creating these is important. In order for the sound to be accurate you will also have to consider the time in which you create the sounds. Ordinary objects a usually used to create the sounds that people in the films, such as shoes, chains, chairs etc.

Wild tracks 

Wild tracks is the recorded audio that is gathered from a location in our to be used in post-production to create the atmosphere of the location. This a way of recording different sounds in locations that will be taken and used in post-production.

Theme music - The theme music is also known as a soundtrack. It is used to create the form of a characters signature tune whether it be in a radio drama or film. It is an indication of something important as well as the importance of a specific character. The theme music is used to ensure the audience knows the beginning and end of a film or radio drama.

 Voice-overs -
Voice overs is used in audio visual products in two ways. There can be an unseen narrator who helps anchor the meaning to the audience that is being set in a specific scene. In advertisements voice over are very informative and tells the audience about a product that is being publicized.

 Radar Radio

In radar radio they use a lot of equipment to run their radio station. One of the equipment they use is a microphone. They use this in order for people to hear what they are saying and for the producers to hear them. They also use headphones in order to hear the producers in the other room telling them how long is left for that section and what they will be doing next. In the image you can see a mixer which has all of the sounds and jingles that they have created on it so when they are doing their show they will have the sounds at their disposal. They also have various screens because they regularly upload to YouTube so the screens will show them how they look. Radar radio also use a number of laptops to have up so they are able to go on celebrities social media sites and talk to them about it. They also have what is called a digital cart wall which has the different tracks loaded on it. This allows them to access all the music that they have loaded on to it and play it once they have finished their discussion section. They also have speakers to have music play out loud.

What is a digital cartwall?

A digital cartwall is a digital screen that has different audio sounds loaded on to it. A radio station would load all the audio before the radio station is going on air. There will be various different audios on it that have been made in the past or they have just recently made them and added them to the digital cartwall. With digital cartwall some radio station collect the songs that they will be using and then they edit so make sure that the songs do not play over time. In Radar Radio they use the digital cartwall to load all the songs that they want to play for that section. They also use you it has all their jingles that they have create with people that they have interviewed. They also have a separate screen that has all of the audio that they use for their music beds which is connected to their mixing board.

What is a playlist?

A playlist is a collection of songs or music that have been chosen by a radio station to be broadcasted on their radio station. The way that radar radio use playlist is by loading all the music that they play on their radio station onto a social media platform called soundcloud. Radar Radio utilize this social media platform as another way of connecting with their audience. They make it available to everyone and they advertise their playlist by stating their that they have a playlist that is available on soundcloud.

What is a digital playout system?

A digital playout system is when a radio station loads all of the music, jingles and adverts on a system and it acts as if the radio station is running live and but it has all of the songs and adverts loaded on a system and radio stations are able to play it and it acts as a real live radio station. This when a radio station load all of the list of all the songs that they played in their radio station and they post the list on the website. This will allow people to search the music that they have heard on the radio station and want to download or hear more of the song. Radar Radio have a list of all the songs that they played in the radio station and upload to the list on their mixcloud page.
 

Distribution methods

 

Analogue broadcast

Analogue broadcasting in radio is the transmission of waves that convey data and voice to radios. It works by radio waves carry energy as an invisible, up-and-down movement of electricity. They radio waves travel along the ocean waves. This carries program signals from huge transmitter antennas, which are connected to the radio station, to the smaller antenna on your radio set. However the radio station that I have been studying does not use this form of distribution.

Digital broadcast

This form of broadcasting uses digital signals rather than analog signals to broadcast over radio frequency. Digital broadcasting is audio broadcasting in which analog audio is converted into a digital signal and transmitted on an assigned channel in the AM or (more usually) FM frequency range. The radio station that I have been studying does not use this form of distribution.

Satellite/terrestrial TV channels

Satellite TV channels is a communications satellite that is in the earths orbit which is directed to the viewers locations. The people who receive the satellites channel they use an outdoor antenna and a low-noise block download converter. Terrestrial TV channels is a type of television broadcasting in which the television signal is transmitted via radio waves. The radio station that I have been studying does not use the type of distribution.

Internet

This is a from of distribution that radio stations have been using to distribute and reach a large audience. They use the from of broadcasting called streaming which is a a form of audio and video streaming, is when a media file can be played back without having to download or record. This is the form of distribution that the radio station that I have been studying uses. They use this form of distrubtion in order to appeal to there target audience and so that they can listen back to their previous shows. They use apps as another way of distributing their radio station which allows them to connect with their audience.
