Radio station report

Radar Radio

Background

The radio station that I have to analyses is Radar radio. Radar radio is a music radio station that streams the sound on young London. They showcase a number of styles such as grime, afrobeats, techno and UK rap for 12hours a day. They call themselves 'the next generation of radio'. This radio station was founded by Oliver Ashley, 26 started with the idea of radio station after college and when he was working with another station, RINSE who he worked with one of his friends called Monki. They both they had an idea of forming a streaming radio service. They built a team of underground DJ's in London and create a radio station that highlights the future of music in London.

Audience profile

The usual demographics for this radio station is young people from the age of 17 to 25+. They try and appeal to both genders. The nationality that Radar radio appeal to is the united kingdom because the music that is the music that they represent in the radio station. The ethnicity that they appeal to is all ethnicity. The lifestyle that they audience that they live is young and care free most of them in education and work part time jobs. These people spending power is the money that they earn from their jobs which could range from £8 per hour.

Breakfast w/Shy-20th February

The program that I will be analyzing is the breakfast show with Shy. The general structure is it will start with music and then she will introduce herself and she will then speak with her co radio star and then they will talk about a topic that is going on right now and the radio show acts as a long conversation with breaks of music. The main focus for this show is to entertain people and inform them about up and coming artists. The show will run up to 1hr 30mins.

The beginning of show has a the jingle says (you are now listening to breakfast w/shy. This lets the audience know that Shy's section of the radio is about to begin (jingle). The show straight after begins to play music. The music she played first was a song by an up and coming artist named Headie one. The playlist that she plays after this song is a mix which a mixture of different songs without any breaks. After the music is done playing then introduces herself and goes on and explains that they will be having an interview with a music artist Shakka this is at 26:34. She they goes on to explain that they are preparing a quiz for him after they done their research on him and saw that he likes to do quiz's. She then explains that she is not going to offer him alcohol because she believes he is not a drinker.  After that she went on to play music and gives a brief description of the song and then she went on to talk about this artist that has not replied to their email that is requesting for him to come on the radio station. Then she added a short jingle from and artist called 23 and he has a song called 'ain't bothered' and the jingle states a 'your listening to breakfast with Shy and she ain't bothered'. As she is going to play the song by Avenlino she has the song as music bed and then she stops talking and plays the music. After the song was done she entered back in by saying 'that was avenlino big tune'. This appeals to the target audience because it uses colloquial language which is informal language that connects with her target audience. While she is talking there is a music bed with is high temp and upbeat. This conveys the type of radio show she is presenting and it also keeps the audience connect to show because they will more comfortable with her speaking. She then went onto the next song and speaks about the artist and how she feels about him. She then went on to talk about the other artist that she was going to play next and she spoke about how other radio stations did not want to play his music because he don't have many club bangs so they can't get behind it. Shy does not agree with the other station decision and she played his music on her radio station. After that song plays Avenlino enters and Shy says 'everybody Avenlino in the building'. She then asked him how he was doing.

When Shy has an interview with people she usually creates a game that is catered to them for example Shy had an interview with Krept and Konan and because they are known for their punch lines she created a game that involved them picking a word out of a hat and creating verse out of it and if it 'bangs' they don't have to drink but if it 'flops' they take a drink (show).  The show begins at 10:00 and stops at 11:30. This radio show is mainly for entertainment however they introduce new artist which which is informing people about these artist. They also have people from different from over sea such as Rich The Kid from America which brings to light their music. The people that they appeal to is young people between the age of 17 to 25 year olds. Most of them are in education.

sound characteristics

In this task I was told to explain how different sounds elements are used.

 Educate

Sounds that are used to educate people is through narration. Their would usually be someone narrating what is being shown on the screen and explaining the different things in order to educate the public. The example that I have chosen is a documentary about wild life and they take you on a journey through the animal kingdom. They put cameras on the animals and watch them and watch they do. You will be able to hear different sounds such as the animals voices and the commentators voice explaining the different animals behavior.  My example is Animals with cameras.
The purpose for the sounds such as the animals is to demonstrate what they sound like. Another sound that you would hear is the commentator speaking which is there to give dialogue to what is being shown on screen. At the beginning you are able to hear the sound of the animals.

Entertain

The way that sound is used to entertain people is through things such non diegetic sounds made in post-production in order to create different atmosphere. They can also use diegetic sounds which are common in radio dramas. They create sounds as they are recording and they use that to create meaning and to give the audience ideas of where the characters are and what they are doing. The example I have chosen is George R Sims - The Haverstock Hill Murder.
In the first few seconds they introduce you to the characters by stating their name and then they tell you what they are doing through sound. So it states that one of the characters is called Johnny and it highlights the fact that they are in bed because he is snoring and she is telling him to wake up. There is also a sign that they are in another country because their is sounds of people speaking in another language. This radio entertains people because is has drama mystery which people may find entertaining.

Inform

Sound can be used to inform people through dialogue and through music. For example in radio they use sound to inform people through news. They also have short music to indicate that the news is about to start and get people ready to hear the news. In television they use a sound to create atmosphere. They use dramatic music for serious news and use lighter music for happier news. They use music to convey the mood of the news. For this task I have chosen this media product for example sky news. They use different music to indicate many things such as their intro music which is a short piece of music that is used to let people know that the news is about to begin and they use dialogue to inform people about daily news and tell people about world news to keep them informed. In the live sky news feed the man stated the new that he will be discussing.

Sell productions

Sound in the advertising industry is used across radio, television and web site. They use dialogue and music in order to engage the audiences and to help promote the product. They generally use a jingle in order to have the product stuck in their minds so it will have them sing the jingle in their heads and the audience will connect the jingle to the product. They also use dialogue in order to informing people about the product. They also may use dialogue be saying a phase that may stay in the audience minds so when they see the phase on a poster or hear the phase on TV or radio the audience will connect the phase with the advert. For this section I have chosen OMEGA. In this advert they are promoting the Olympic and their own product (omega watch), they use diegetic sound from actual events in order to remind the audience of the time and they also use music to create an atmosphere of accomplishment. The music used is usual from a common artist that has been in the charts. This is to create a connection with the advert. The artist that they used is the harry styles.

Wild tracks

These are sounds that are recorded while production is taken place such as dialogue or sound affects that have been recorded either while production is happening or after production some people record after production and add it to the media product. In a television show on the BBC called eastenders they use wild track to record audio dialogue that is being said during production and they will be able to add it in post production.

Atmospheric sound

These sounds are sounds that could be created to imitate the atmosphere or taken directly from the wild life and used across different media products. Some of the media products use atmospheric sounds to enhance their media product, for example for a advert they might use the winds to let the audience know that they are outside and it tells the audience that they are in a windy area. The example I have chosen is the Sainsbury advert.
In this advert they use various wild track sounds such as the wind in the beginning of the advert to let the audience know that they are in a windy setting and as the advert goes on they have the sounds of a bird flapping its wigs.
